FAQ & Troubleshooting
Does Synchrony™ work with any type of music?
The Synchrony™ LED controller contains an advanced oscillatory neural network that simulates the synchronization of the brain’s rhythms to musical rhythms. This means it will work with any style of music, electronic or acoustic, recorded or live, any rhythm, and any instrument. But it works best with music that has a constant beat.
Have a specific request? Just ask!
Are Synchrony™ LEDs waterproof?
The Synchrony™ LED controller and LEDs are water resistant. They can be used indoors or outdoors, but they are not designed to be submerged in water. If you install the Synchrony™ LED controller outdoors, please make sure that the USB and AUX ports are tightly covered with the rubber stoppers, and that all connections are secure, as described in the user manual.
Note also that the power supply sold with the controller is not fully water resistant (only the cable from the power brick to the controller is water resistant). For permanent or semi-permanent outdoor installations, we recommend that you purchase the fully water resistant power supply available (soon) in our store.
Does Synchrony™ work without the mobile app?
You do not need the Synchrony™ LEDs mobile app to use Synchrony™. The controller is designed to operate on its own. Just plug it in, connect the LEDs, and turn on the music.
The Pattern button (on the left) allows you to select one of nine predefined patterns. The Color button (on the right) allows you to select one of the six predefined color sets. However, certain features, such as custom color sets and non-music modes, are only available using the Synchrony™ LEDs mobile app (available for iOS and Android).
How do I connect the mobile app?
Download the Synchrony™ LEDs mobile app from the Google Play Store or Apple’s App Store. Turn on the bluetooth on your device.
To connect the Synchrony™ LEDs app, make sure the Synchrony™ LED controller is running. Press and hold the reset button on the Synchrony™ controller for 5 seconds.
In the app, hit the refresh button at the bottom of the My Devices page. After a few seconds, when the app senses the Synchrony™ controller, the “+ Add Controllers” button will become enabled. Press the “+ Add Controllers” button, and a new device will appear as Connected.
Does Synchrony™ only work if music is playing?
While music is what Synchrony™ does best, it has four other light modes that work without music: 1) a single color option, 2) a color fade option, 3) a free-running pattern mode, and 4) an ambient mode. These can be selected from the mobile app (see documentation). So you can use Synchrony™ to light up your life no matter what the occasion!
The Synchrony™ controller contains an advanced oscillatory neural network that simulates the synchronization of the brain’s rhythms to the rhythm of any sound. It can be fun to experiment with different rhythmic sounds. Try watching how Synchrony responds to the rhythms of speech!
Will the controller work with LED strips sold by other manufacturers?
Synchrony™ can theoretically control any 5V individually addressable LEDs. However, Synchrony™ controllers and LEDs are constructed with high-quality, waterproof connectors so that they can be used outdoors. This means you can only connect Synchrony™ LED strips and strings to your controller. You can purchase extra LED strips or strings in our store.
How many LEDs can be controlled from one Synchrony™ controller?
Each controller can drive up to 600 LED pixels. That’s 4 of our 150-pixel LED strips or 12 of our 50-pixel LED strings. For a complete description of the recommended setups, see our documentation page. If you connect too many LEDs, the lights at the end of the chain will not receive enough power. For larger installations, you can either 1) use multiple Synchrony™ controllers, or 2) purchase a power injector from our store.
Can I power Synchrony™ LEDs through the USB port?
You may find that if you connect the micro USB to a power source, Synchrony™ will power up. This is not a recommended method of powering the device! The Synchrony™ controller requires 5 volts and 2.4 amps minimum. Most USB chargers simply will not provide this much power. If the LEDs draw too much power, the controller will crash! Some USB chargers output more voltage than they are supposed to, which could damage the controller.
My Synchrony™ controller is on, and the music is playing, but the LEDs are not synchronizing to the music.
Synchrony™ can listen through the built-in microphone or the aux input, but not both at the same time. If you want it to listen through the microphone, make sure that there is not a cable connected to the aux port because this disables the microphone. If you want Synchrony™ to listen through the aux port, make sure that your device (phone, tablet, computer, or stereo) is sending sound through the aux cable. Synchrony™ does not listen through the USB port.
If you have enabled one of the ambient lighting modes using the Synchrony™ App, then Synchrony™ LEDs will light up, but it will ignore the music. To change listening mode, load the App on your mobile device, select the Synchrony™ controller, and select the “Music” option under Mode.
I switched the power on, but my Synchrony™ controller is not working.
When the power is switched on, the first (red) status light will come on. The controller takes about 30 seconds to boot, at which point the green status light will come on. If the power has been switched on for more than thirty seconds and the second (green) status light has not turned on then there may be a problem.
Check if the third (blue) status LED is on. If so, you may have accidentally booted the device in software update mode. This happens if you press the reset button during boot up. To fix this, simply power the device off and then on again, being careful not to press any other buttons.
